what is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a method of generating income by posting a link to another site and making people click on that link. If someone clicks that link, you are paid a fixed fee or a commission.

It allows web masters, bloggers, media personalities, trusted experts or basically anyone who can post a link somewhere and convince someone else to click it (and buy the goods, service,...) to generate revenue without any further effort and without getting involved in online shopping, sales, support, after sales and so on.

Affiliate marketing can be very effective when you have either very good quality targeted traffic (you have a popular golf blog and post a link/advert to an online golf shop) or a large quantity of traffic (when you've got 100.000 visitors/day, surely someone will be interested in golf and proceed to click your link).

Affiliate marketing works and can be very effective but has some drawbacks (besides putting op a site and driving traffic to it):

A theoretical example

Just proposing any affiliate marketing link on your web pages is unlikely to have a high success rate. Let's say you have a page on outdoor activities. A visitor looking for information on golf will not be interested when the webpage he lands on talks about outdoor activities in general.

Due to the idiosyncrasies of search engine algorithms however, your hypothetical page on outdoor activities might just generate a lot of traffic on golf, geocaching and horseback riding... and there's this website with tourist info on Maine (www.maine-freak.com) that also generously generates some traffic by linking to your page.

You could handle this by posting affiliate links of interest to all 4 activities/visitor groups, cluttering your web page and diluting your visitor's attention. The average website visitor is much focused, has a very limited attention span and only scans a page without really reading anything.

Your visitors don't care about your content

Most visitors will arrive at your page and click that back button before you can say 'affiliate marketing' because your page doesn't seem to be exactly about what they are looking for and the next page in the 100's of results returned by Google just might.
