affiliate marketing the popupbooster way

Try it For Free

what is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a method of generating income by posting a link to another site and making people click on that link. If someone clicks that link, you are paid a fixed fee or a commission.

It allows web masters, bloggers, media personalities, trusted experts or basically anyone who can post a link somewhere and convince someone else to click it (and buy the goods, service,...) to generate revenue without any further effort and without getting involved in online shopping, sales, support, after sales and so on.

Affiliate marketing can be very effective when you have either very good quality targeted traffic (you have a popular golf blog and post a link/advert to an online golf shop) or a large quantity of traffic (when you've got 100.000 visitors/day, surely someone will be interested in golf and proceed to click your link).

affiliate marketing problems:

Affiliate marketing works and can be very effective but has some drawbacks (besides putting op a site and driving traffic to it):

  • When to propose what link
  • Visitors not seeing what they were searching for and clicking that 'back' button faster than light (ok, this isn't solely an affiliate marketing problem)
  • Not easy for most people to test the CTR (click-through ratio) of your message/banner/advert
  • Search engines might give a penalty for having affiliate links on your site (this is not official, but is there anything official about the search engine's algorithms?)

traditional popup problems

the traditional popup script doesn't measure CTR. And if it would, could you be bothered to test different messages, images,... on a regular base to increase your CTR?

  • every change requires you to dive into the script, html or java script
  • no wysiwyg editing
  • not really a preview option - every change is 'live' immediately
  • no CTR recording
  • one popup has to fit all - no way to target specific visitors

Using a traditional popup every change takes too much time and you probably can't be bothered to make any changes in order to increase your CTR, if you even have a way of measuring your CTR in the first place.

affiliate marketing the popupbooster way

A theoretical example

Just proposing any affiliate marketing link on your web pages is unlikely to have a high success rate. Let's say you have a page on outdoor activities. A visitor looking for information on golf will not be interested when the webpage he lands on talks about outdoor activities in general.

make maximum use of your traffic, also the unexpected traffic your page wasn't optimized for

Due to the idiosyncrasies of search engine algorithms however, your hypothetical page on outdoor activities might just generate a lot of traffic on golf, geocaching and horseback riding... and there's this website with tourist info on Maine (www.maine-freak.com) that also generously generates some traffic by linking to your page.

You could handle this by posting affiliate links of interest to all 4 activities/visitor groups, cluttering your web page and diluting your visitor's attention. The average website visitor is much focused, has a very limited attention span and only scans a page without really reading anything.

Your visitors don't care about your content

Most visitors will arrive at your page and click that back button before you can say 'affiliate marketing' because your page doesn't seem to be exactly about what they are looking for and the next page in the 100's of results returned by Google just might.

show something relevant to your visitor immediately - dramatically decrease your bounce rate

Using Popupbooster however, you could propose your affiliate offer in a popup (however loud or discreet you prefer... or which one gives the best CTR), and have a specific popup with your specific offer triggered by the search terms/keywords the visitor typed in the search engine before visiting your sites, or by the page he found your link on.

For your theoretical outdoor activities site, you could make 4 popups with an affiliate offer for each of those 4 reasons people visit your page: golf, geocaching, horseback riding and because they want to visit Maine.

These popups could be triggered by words in the search terms used ('golf' for anything golf related, 'geocach' to catch anything geocache and geocaching, 'horse' for horseback riding) or by the referring site where the user came from: that site with Maine tourist info.

This way, the visitor landing on your page will immediately see something relevant to what he's looking for. If the rest of your page is less relevant that might even be good, because there's an increased chance your affiliate link in your popup gets clicked.

objections

Find out which targeting opportunities you might be missing - popupbooster automatically tracks all visitors, how they got to your site and if their visit triggered a popup

"And what if there or other visitors that don't trigger a popup?"
I hear you asking. Well, you can install a 'catch all' popup that gets triggered only when no other popup does, and since popupbooster also automatically tracks all visitors and how they got to your site, we can easily show which targeting opportunities you might be missing.

"But I have loyal following on my site and don't want to bother them with popups all the time"
No problem, you can configure popupbooster to show a popup only once in a definable number of days.

"But... but... it's a popup!"
Yes it is Jim, but not as we know it. You could also call it a 'dynamic overlay'. You can make it as in-your-face or as subtle as you want and the exact same techniques are used in the majority of of the top 100 (according to Alexa) websites.

Other objections ? Contact us: info at popupbooster dot com. We want to work with you to make this work for you. (also contact us if you know how to say the previous sentence in a less cheesy way)

  • Too many links will clutter your website and dilute your visitor's attention
  • Many links and nobody clicks on them as there is no differentiation
  • Irrelevant links or adverts don't generate interest - only annoyance

popupbooster allows conditional affiliate marketing:
Only when certain conditions are met, the affiliate marketing link is proposed in a popup, allowing you to deliver a very targeted message for a very targeted service or product to your visitors.

testing your message to increase clicks (=revenue)

Popupbooster features live CTR testing out of the box for each individual popup

By just inserting a affiliate marketing link into your website, chances are only a few people will click. You have no tool to test the effectiveness of your message, banner or advert.

Popupbooster allows you to test your messaging for every specific affiliate marketing link as Click Through Rates (CTR) are reported live for each popup in use.

Measuring and testing = success and revenue.

penalty free affiliate marketing

By inserting affiliate marketing links on your website you might get a penalty from search engines which will decrease your findability. There is no official evidence to support this, but just how much about the search engines' algorithms is officially documented?

Using popupbooster the search engine bots will not readily find the affiliate marketing link embedded in the popup. The popup is 'hidden' in dynamically generated java script. Most (legit) bots don't visit your site as if coming from a referring link or using keywords through a search engine (except for Bing) so they won't trigger any popups and won't 'see' your affiliate links.

You could call this 'accidental cloaking'. In any case, we think there's a very thin line between cloaking and targeting.

You insert the java script link ONCE and from then on control EVERYTHING from within the application

no coding - no fiddling with html, asp, java script,...

Inserting and changing the placement of your affiliate marketing links requires time and effort, can lead to errors or bad looking web pages and generally isn't the most pleasant job.

Using Popupbooster no coding of html or ftp uploading is required:

You insert the java script link ONCE and from then on control EVERYTHING from within our wysiwyg user interface.

live preview

Live preview on the target site without interference to your visitors

How do you test changes to your site? You just make them and see what they look like, while your visitors might see any errors you make at the same time?

Popupbooster allows you to construct and preview a popup on your website, without interference to your visitors, all at the click of a button.

affiliate marketing method

Popupbooster allows you to present messages and links to your visitor by a simple copy/paste of the link.
Multiple popups can be showed on different conditions, targeted to what your visitors are looking for.

You could easily, within a matter of minutes, log in to your popupbooster account, check the CTR to see which one of your popups isn't performing as it should, alter your text, images,... and come back in a couple of days (or hours if you have enough traffic) to see if your CTR has improved.
